I got in my car, tears blinding my eyes, and drove to the nearest Starbucks. I needed to get a warm drink to calm my nerves. I needed time to gather my thoughts. My life had become so complicated lately, so out of control. I was beginning to wonder if Matchscort was the right thing for me. It seemed to have given me more trouble than benefit lately. Losing my best friend had been the last straw.
As I sat stirring my extra-large coffee, a hand touched my arm. I turned and found myself face to face with Westcott’s intelligent brown eyes. He looked so handsome, wearing those rimless European glasses. He wore slouchy but stylish jeans and had his long, unruly hair pushed off his face. He was so good looking that my breath caught.
“Ariella,” he said, in a voice so wistful my chest pinged. “What a coincidence.”
“How are you, Westcott?” I stirred my coffee, hoping he wouldn’t notice my thumping pulse.
His voice was low. “I’ve been better. I haven’t been able to get you out of my mind. Where have you been? You haven’t returned my calls.”
“I know.” I met his eyes. “I’m sorry. I’ve been busy, plus I’ve needed time to think.”
He pulled up a chair without asking. “I came on too strong. I realize that now. I’m sorry.”
I shrugged. “That’s okay. It wasn’t all you. Things have been intense in my life lately. I’ve been trying to figure myself out. I don’t know what I want.”
“I wish it could be me.” He gazed at me with those velvet brown eyes that had looked at me with such longing when we made love.
I bit my lip. “Well, it could be. But not right now. Not until we get to know each other better.”
“I’m willing to go slow. For you. Would you give me another chance?” He gazed deeply into my eyes. He reached out and stroked a strand of hair out of my face. Then he slowly ran his hand down my cheek to my lips, where he touched my bottom lip. The gesture was so tender, and yet so sexy, that my heart rate picked up.
“We can’t rush things, Westcott. I don’t believe in love at first sight.” I gave him an impish look, trying to lighten things up. “Or first fuck.”
He winced. “It wasn’t fucking to me. You were my first. And I want you to be my last.”
I gulped. “See, those are the kinds of things you can’t say to a girl you barely know.”
“Touché.” He looked chagrined. “I’m just a passionate guy. It’s the artist in me. I say what I feel. And I feel strongly.”
“I know.” I smiled.
He smiled back. “Hey, would you like to come over for lunch? I make a mean turkey and brie sandwich.”
“I’m not hungry—” As if on cue, my stomach growled loudly. Talk about betrayal!
His eyes twinkled, and we both laughed.
“Okay,” I said. “But only for lunch. Nothing else. We need to take things slowly, remember?”
“Sure. Of course.
